If Carpetman isn’t going to post a recipe for black eyed peas, here goes; first you get some dried black eyed peas, and be sure to look them good, like you would pinto beans. Put the beans in a pot with some fatback, bacon, or sowbelly for seasoning, toss in an onion, quartered, or cut up smaller if you are so inclined add some salt and pepper, cover thebeans with water and cook them till they are tender. They are going to absorb some water so you may have to add some as they cook.

Black eyed peas have been a Southern tradition since Sherman’s March Through Georgia, when the yankee troops destroyed everything in their path that could be used as food. It was said a crow had to pack his lunch to fly across the trail of devastation Shermans' troops left. But the yankees didn’t know Black Eyed Peas were food and did not destroy them. Black eyed peas were all the Georgians had left with which to celebrate new years day. Now each pea eaten on new years day represents a day of good luck in the coming year.

Chick peas are used in middle eastern cooking (Greek, Lebanese, etc.) to make Tahini and Hummus which are appetizers, bean dip actually, and it is good. Try cookbooks.com and enter chick pea in the recipe search.

As far as mutton goes, Carpetman lives in what the chamber of commerce used to call “the wool capitol of the world” (I dont know it this is still true) because it was the largest inland (i.e. not in Australia) wool market in the world. Texans dont eat sheep though.

Wills beat me to it, but will give you my favorite recipe for black eyed peas anyway.
        1/4# diced bacon
        1/2 cup diced yellow onion
        1 cup black eyed peas
        1 can yellow hominy
        1 cup frozen mixed vegetables

In the morning, before leaving for work, put the blackeyed peas in the crock pot, set on "high" with 3-4 cups of water, and a bit of salt. After work, turn crock pot to "low", fry bacon, and onion, drain, and add to crock pot.  Add frozen vegatables and hominy about 1 hour before you want to eat.  Season with salt, pepper and garlic to taste.  Serve with fried corn bread, and don't get to close to any open flames.  I consider it "good eats", but then again, I was 'bout 14 years old before I knew brown beans and fried taters weren't Meat.
